Methodology

How the women's ratings are computed, where the data comes from, and how to cite them.

What the rating is

Players and coaches are rated individually with the Elo rating system. Each match result is attributed to the players who were on the pitch and the coach who picked them. Coaches are rated on the same scale as players and carry real weight in a team's strength. A club's Team Elo is rebuilt from its squad's individual ratings rather than measured directly.

This is a separate model, trained and calibrated on women's football alone. Its scale is not comparable with the men's site, and nothing here is derived from a men's rating.

How a match updates the ratings

  • Each match is read as a lineup: starters, bench and coach.
  • Their ratings are combined into a position-weighted team strength for that match.
  • The result updates every participant by how surprising it was: an underdog gains more from an upset than a favourite from an expected win, and the margin of victory counts.
  • Each competition carries its own home advantage and strength offset.
  • A new player starts from the strength of the team she debuts for, not from a flat starting value.

EAR and EAR180

Elo Above Replacement (EAR) is football's version of baseball's Wins Above Replacement: every rated match scores a player against the average performance for her position, and EAR adds those scores up.

  • EAR180 covers the last 180 days: current form.
  • Career EAR covers every rated match.
  • The tier labels are cut on the women's own distribution, not borrowed from the men's thresholds.
  • The model's form weight is zero: EAR180 is shown on player, club and league pages, but it does not change any prediction.

Data

  • Matches and lineups come from API-Football.
  • Biographical details, such as date of birth and nationality, come from public football databases.
  • Every rating is computed by PlayerElo's own women's model.
  • Ratings and history are served from PlayerElo's own database, and the pages are rendered server-side.

Updates

The ratings are rebuilt daily from the match corpus. The footer shows the date of the last update.

What this site does not have

  • No API. The commercial PlayerElo API serves men's football only.
  • No market-value estimates, no transfer feed, no transfer-fit scoring.
  • No form overlay in the predictions.
  • No pre-match lineups. API-Football publishes a women's lineup only after the match, so predictions are built from each club's squad Elo.

Those are men's-football features and live at playerelo.football.
